No Coupon…What? Saving Money Without Coupons

Couponing is a fabulous way to save money and get tons of freebies, but what about those things for which there almost never seem to be coupons? Do you have to pay a lot of money for those things? Not as much as you might think. Here are a few ways to save money on such things as meat and produce.

Farmer’s Market
I know this one is used a lot, but it’s for a good reason. Local farmers typically charge less for their fruits and veggies than grocery stores. No middle man. You have the added benefit of talking directly to the people that grew it, so you know where it comes from.
Local cattle farmers will sell their beef at community markets as well, though they aren’t always as cheap as certain grocery stores. My brother has gotten some really good locally grown beef at his farmer’s market. He may have paid a tiny bit more than at the grocery stores on this front, but the quality was infinitely better.

Buy in season
Ever notice how tomatoes are affordable when they’re in season and ridiculous when they’re not? The laws of supply and demand=cheaper produce when it’s in season.

Shop Sales
As couponers, we are seasoned pros at this one. Comparing grocery store ads can save you lots. One week, Food Lion will have strawberries on sale and Harris Teeter will have chicken and then the next week, vice versa.

Grocery Promotions/store coupons
Target and Food Lion, among others offer store coupons. I remember printing a coupon good for $3 off my next $5 produce purchase last year at Food Lion. Catalinas are also

Discount Bakeries for Bread
Companies like Flowers have a lot of discount stores where you can buy “day old bread” for cheap and eat it up fast.

Rebates
If your state participates, many beer companies offer mail in rebates on items you usually don’t find coupons for. The best part? You don’t even have to buy the beer to get the money. As with all rebates, make sure you keep that receipt.

Money Maker Rollover Deals
I’ve never actually made any money anywhere at Target, but most of the time, if I have supplemental items in my basket, the free + overage will work on covering some of the cost of the extra items, so plan to grab fruits, veggies and meat when you have a good free + overage deal.

Got any other ideas? Please share!
Post Grad
So, I've been reading a couple of investment books and though they are several years old, the advice remains basically the same even though the interest rates are considerably lower.
Anyone have any advice about who I should go with once I've saved up enough money for a Money Market Account? I've read that American Express Bank out of New York has one of the better rates. Any of you guys have these? Any advice?
Thanks!

If your state has the tearpads in a grocery store from Michelob Ultra, they are offering $6 off a $10 or more fresh/frozen seafood purchase, then you can sweeten this deal at ALDI this week.
Sea Queen Frozen seafood is $3.49 this week. Not sure about all varieties, but the salmon is 4 fillets/pack.
Buy 3 packs at $10.47 and Get $6 back.
Total $0.38 per fillet after MIR or $1.49 per 4 pack.

I'm so excited! I went to Target today, and I finally got to use my $1/1 Thai Kitchen Printables from over a month ago. I've been watching these things since they were on sale for $2.04. They finally went down to $0.98 each, making them free after my coupons.
I went for the HP ink deal but they were sold out of the black cartridges. The color ones weren't worth it even after the sale and the GC, so hopefully the truck will bring some more Wednesday.
I did find some $1.27 Diego Bandaids on clearance that with my $1/1 Target printable and the $0.50/1 MF made them a $0.23 money maker.
Found the Purex "try fabric softener free" tags on the detergent, so hunted up the fabric softener and am mailing the rebate in tomorrow.
Dad needed a can of Refried Beans, so I saved $.01 on them after tax and the money maker.

I also found the dark chocolate Reeses cups at Family Dollar. The girl said the MF wouldn't scan because it was for too much but she offered to just change the price, making them $.03 together (just tax).
So, all in all, pretty sweet day.

I was browsing the beer/wine section at Food Lion and found some interesting mail in rebate offers on tear pads.

$6 MIR on Gourmet Crackers & Fine Cheese (as long as you buy more than $10 worth) from Stella Artois. Note: no need to purchase the Stella to get this money.

$6 MIR on the purchase of Fresh or Frozen Seafood (as long as you spend more than $10 worth) from Michelob Ultra. Again, no need to buy the beer. Jumbo shrimp are BOGO for $13.99 a Food Lion this week. Thought I'd try a couple of other places before going for that. Maybe something for like $10.99 or so.

These aren't as much but if you buy a lot of wine, you could get up to $20 back:
Redwood Creek
$1/1 70ml or larger, $8/6 and $20/12.

Gallo Family Wines
$3/2 750ml bottles, $2/1 1.5l size bottle.

Turning Leaf
$1/1 750 ml or larger, $5/2, $9/3

I also grabbed these peelies:
$1/1 Dial for Men Body Wash (excludes travel size)
$0.70/1 Kellogg's Corn Pops, Apple Jacks, Froot Loops Cereal 12 oz. or larger
$0.50/1 New York Texas Tost
Saw machines for these but they were all out:
Smart Balance (didn't say how much or what it was good on)
BOGO Kraft cheese (maybe next time)

I made the trip to Food Lion this afternoon, found a few deals and got treated very well. I did the text deal you can read about here. Turns out, it didn't automatically post to my MVP card. I usually wait until Monday to visit Target but I was out anyway this afternoon and decided to hit a few of the advertised deals early. I'll probably go back at some point this week once new clearance stuff has been marked down. Here's what I got:

10 Sobe Life Waters AND a $5 GC
1 Olay Body Quench Lotion
3 packs of Orbit Gum
Connect 4 (see this post for an advisory on that)
Purina Cat Chow

Subtotal: $37.36
Target & Coupon Savings: $22.34
Rollover GC: $3.58
Total out of pocket: $12.09
$7.79 MIR on Body Quench
$5 Target Gift Card back
$0.70 Money maker after all is said and done.

Note: Target let me use 5 of the $0.50/1 in addition to the 5 BOGO coupons for the Sobe deal, making it a $2.50 money maker after gift card.

If you're heading to Target and getting Connect 4 for free (see deal here), then make sure that the game rings up correctly. I didn't realize until I was on my way out of the store that it actually rang up at $14.99. Customer service was awesome and immediately credited the $8.39 back on my card but I almost missed it, so double check your receipt.

I've had my iTouch for around a year and a half now; I love it, and I don't even have any music on it! Not only can you surf the web, calculate grocery totals/coupons and check your e-mail, but you can also download some really awesome FREE apps that help with being frugal. Here are a few I've tried:

Balance - This is really just a checkbook. You put in your info and record each time you make a deposit or withdrawl. Since I've never been one to sit down and hand write all that out, this helps me keep up with my account a little better.

2Do Lite - This handly little app lets you organize your "to-dos" by home and work. Once you do that, you set the date by which it needs to be complete. When it's done, you can delete or put a cute little check mark by it. I like the check mark option because it makes me feel more accomplished, hehe.

Grocery Gadget Lite - Grocery Gadget lets you make your list but it's cooler than that. It has a list of bunches of things you can just add (or you can add your own) and once it's added, you can put in the price and/or any coupons you have for it just to make sure you don't forget to use them.

Budget Tool (lite) - Budget tool is pretty much self explanatory. It breaks down your expenses, advises you when any of them are a bit high and lets you see pie charts of your spending to help you keep it under control.

Kindle for iPhone - There are tons of free books for the Kindle, so they'll work on the app interface as well.

Cool Curlings Lite - This one doesn't have much to do with anything. I just think it's fun. I love Curling! hehe.

The friends and I made a road trip two hours south to Charlotte today. The destination, IKEA! I found some things to add to my closet stash, hehe.
The little throw pillows were only $2.99 each and I'm planning to get either a black or dark, neutral couch, so they'll go with most anything. Aren't they adorable?
Couldn't pass up the lamp shades either! Found a couple tiny lamps at Kmart a few months ago for about $3 each but so far no luck with shades. These were $7 each and the sunflowers are bright and funky. Didn't have a tool set and at $8 it's not a bad deal for a starter set. Finally, been looking for a bathroom scale. This one was only $5!
I spent about $35 total but in my opinion, money well spent. I have to take advantage of IKEA when I can get down there.
Almost bought a coffee table. Luckily it wouldn't fit in the car though so I saved myself a little money.

Not too much stuff but you can't beat free.

That's right. It's Thrifty Thursday. If you saved a bunch of money this week or have a thrifty tip/post to share, check out link up at Coupon Teacher by clicking above.

Here are a few ways I've found to save money on entertainment.

1.Netflix - I've been a satisfied member of Netflix since 2004. Over the past few years, my subscription has fluctuated from 1 at a time to 3 at a time. With their new streaming options, however, I'm back to 1. For $8.99/month, I get one disc rental at a time and can watch unlimited streaming movies/tv shows online. If you have a roku, PS3, Xbox or computer you can select movies from their "Watch Instantly" tab.

2.Rebox/Blockbuster Codes - I've been using the free Redbox codes for a while and last week, our Sheetz got a Blockbuster Express machine! There's usually a code floating around somewhere on the internet to get you a free night's rental on new releases.

3.The Public Library - I rarely read a book/watch a movie more than once, so I've been using the public library a lot recently. They don't have everything, but it's not hard to find something entertaining to read and as time goes on, they get more dvds that you can keep out for a day or two.

4.Goodwill - Our Goodwill has a huge used super-cheap bookstore. If there's a book I do actually want to buy, I usually check here first (followed by Amazon and eBay). They get old LPs, CDs, Tapes and DVDs sometimes, too.

5.Streaming Sites - If you have a fast internet connection, there are tons of sites that provide streaming tv shows and movies. A few of my favorites are TV Shack, Hulu and TV Links. Between Netflix streaming and these sites, I'm not planning on having cable when I get my own place, just an internet connection.

How do you save money on entertainment?

I realized I didn't post an end of the month February post for Bookin' It. Wanna join and keep track of your reading in 2010? Just click on the link above and post the photo/link on your blog.

For the rest of February, I finished:

Living Dead in Dallas was fun. I'm moving slow on the series, but it's great for light reading and I'm starting to really like Sookie. She's definitely a character and I'm looking forward to the further adventures of the cocktail waitress.

Smart Women Finish Rich was invigorating and got me excited about saving and investing. We'll see how I'm able to put these principles into practice, but it set me in the right direction anyway.

The Breast is Philip Roth. It's basically his twisted version of Kafka's Metamorphosis. Despite his tendency to act like a 14 year old boy, the main character, David Kapesh, is growing on me. I think there's a lot of Roth in him and I'm going to try and read the second book.

March is starting a bit slow but I hope to finish strong. What have you been reading?

Tomorrow night is one of my favorites of the year, OSCAR NIGHT! Unfortunately, I'll be at work. That will not stop me from checking updates on IMDB every five or ten minutes, however, hehe. Though I'm not the best at picking winners (I tend to be a bit biased), here go my picks and we'll see how it goes.

Best Picture - The Hurt Locker
Yes, Avatar broke all the records and it was visually stunning and bits of the story were original; however, the storyline has been done before, the acting was just fine and the script wasn't the best I've seen. That said, I really liked Avatar.

Best Actor in a Leading Role - Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
Haven't gotten to see this movie yet, but from what I've heard, he's due.

Best Actress in a Leading Role - Sandra Bullock
She and Streep tied at the Golden Globes but I think this year is one of the few Bullock will get.

Best Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.
Great movie. Great role. Great actor.

Best Supporting Actress - Mo'Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
No way I could ever sit through this movie b/c of the content, but I hear she was absolutely phenomenal.

Directing - James Cameron, Avatar
It was brilliantly directed even if it's not best picture material.

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen - The Hurt Locker
It's tough to choose between that one and Inglourious Basterds.

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published - Up In The Air.
Not 100% on that one, just picked it because I loved it!

Best Achievement in Cinematography - Avatar.
Again. Pretty movie.

Best Achievement in Editing - Inglourious Basterds
Avatar has as good or better shot at this, just love the flow of Basterds.

Best Achievement in Art Direction - Rick Carter, Robert Stromberg, Kim Sinclair, Avatar

Best Achievement in Costume Design - Catherine Leterrier, Coco avant Chanel

Best Achievement in Makeup - Barney Burman, Mindy Hall, Joel Harlow, Star Trek

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year - Up

Best Original Score - Michael Giacchino, Up

Best Original Song - T-Bone Burnett, Ryan Bingham("The Weary Kind"), Crazy Heart

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing - Michael Minkler, Tony Lamberti, Mark Ulano, Inglourious Basterds
Shot in the dark on that guess.

Best Achievement in Sound Editing - Michael Silvers, Tom Myers, Up
Again. Blind guess.

Best Achievement in Visual Effects - Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum, Richard Baneham, Andy Jones, Avatar

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year - Un prophète (France)
Really want to see this one. Blind guess 'cause I haven't gotten to see any of the foreign film nominees yet.

Not going to wager guesses on documentaries or shorts because I haven't heard of most of them.

Happy Oscar night!
:)
