This isn't so much something I learned as a realization. I figured, if I'm not making money, then I'm spending money. With the exception of yesterday, when I didn't get out of my PJs and went outside just once, I usually go out shopping or wandering around on my days off.
I've been kind of doing this here and there, but I've made a conscious decision to make a bit of money each day I'm off. This can involve any number of things. I have a second "job" helping a friend out, so some days he needs me there, so that works. If not, I'm going to try to do a few surveys, work on mTurk, find a money making deal at the stores or sign up for a secret shop. That way, even when I spend money on my days off, I've helped off set it a little bit.
What did you learn this week?

Sundance kicked off it's yearly indy film festival Thursday night and I am a couple thousand miles away but one day I will be there. It's actually on my bucket list. For now, I'll have to follow this year's festival on imdb.com and ifc.com. Here are a few of the films I hope get picked up, even if they don't come within 50 miles of me. (Summaries come from the IFC website.
The Kids Are All Right
The Cast: Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson, Mark Ruffalo, Annette Bening
Director: Lisa Cholodenko
The Gist: Sundance vet Cholodenko ("High Art," "Laurel Canyon") teamed with frequent Edward Norton collaborator Stuart Blumberg to write this Sherman Oaks-set dramedy that stars Bening and Moore star as Nic and Jules, a well-to-do lesbian couple whose teenage children (Hutcherson and Wasikowska) begin to wonder about the identity of their biological father. When the kids decide to call the sperm bank, Nic and Jules find their lives upended by the appearance of their sperm donor (Ruffalo).
Nowhere Boy
The Cast: Aaron Johnson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Thomas Sangster, Anne-Marie Duff, David Morrissey
Director: Sam Taylor Wood
Fest Cred: London, Turin
The Gist: As the star of "Kick-Ass," Johnson is poised to become a fanboy icon in 2010, but here he steps into the shoes of a young John Lennon in the feature debut of noted conceptual artist Wood. Although the 19-year-old Johnson and 42-year-old Wood made headlines for reasons other than the film when they recently announced their engagement, they also received positive notices for the film when it premiered in London in October. Matt Greenhalgh, who previously wrote the Ian Curtis biopic "Control," gives the similar treatment to the future Beatle during his early life in Liverpool under the care of his Aunt Mimi (Thomas) following the death of his mother. The Weinstein Company is set to release the film later this year.
Mother & Child
The Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Naomi Watts, David Morse, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Amy Brenneman, Shareeka Epps
Writer/Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Fest Cred: Toronto
The Gist: Touted as a possible Oscar contender for Bening's performance after it played Toronto, Sony Pictures Classics picked up the latest femme-centric drama from "Nine Lives" director Garcia that takes a few notes from its executive producer Alejandro González Iñárritu in weaving together the stories of a nurse (Bening) who gave up a baby as a teen, her grown-up biological daughter (Watts) and a woman (Washington) who is looking to adopt since she can't conceive. Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing the film on May 7th.
HappyThankYouMorePlease
The Cast: Malin Akerman, Josh Radnor, Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, Tony Hale, Richard Jenkins, Pablo Schreiber, Michael Algieri
Writer/Director: Josh Radnor
The Gist: We still don’t know how Radnor “Met Your Mother,” but we do know that the lead of the popular CBS sitcom star snuck in the shoot of this comedy during hiatuses after picking up as many votes for the script as “The Hangover” on the 2007 Black List. He also stars as Sam Wexler, a self-destructive writer whose life is unexpectedly enriched by taking in a young boy who loses his family at the train station, as his other friends face quarterlife crises in New York.
Howl
The Cast: James Franco, David Strathairn, Jon Hamm, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels
Writer/Directors: Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman
The Gist: “The Life and Times of Harvey Milk” documentarians Epstein and Friedman make the leap to narrative features by profiling another San Francisco icon in beat poet Allen Ginsberg during the 1957 obscenity trial that followed the publication of his landmark poem (with a little animation thrown in to illustrate its hallucinatory nature). Franco stars as Ginsberg with “Mad Men”’s Hamm onhand to defend him in court as Jake Ehrlich.

I really shouldn't complain because I got a lot of good deals this morning, but I must take a minute to vent my frustrations.
Every time I go to Walmart I tell myself never again and for some reason, each time I go back, I think it will be different. Isn't that the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? I think this time I'll actually listen. After today, no more Walmart unless I'm going to: A. pay full price for an item they have cheaper, B. Use a coupon and still owe them money on the item, C. There is a money-maker deal that involves me paying them and getting my money back in a rebate.
I had all the stuff pictured in this post plus a few other things in my basket when I went to check out. The lady wasn't rude but wasn't overly nice either. I could tell as she started ringing in the coupons and looking at them with a blank expression that I knew more about how all that works than she did. No problem. I was patient. After all, I was trying to get something free from them, so I should be really nice.
By the time it was over, she had talked to two other employees and wouldn't accept one of the coupons (legitimately) and wouldn't accept the other even though there was no reason not to. One lady, not really with an attitude said "to me, it's getting over on the coupons," seemingly implying that I was trying to do something underhanded by getting free items with coupons. What does it matter when the manufacturer is going to reimburse them for the money anyway? I kindly thanked her and asked to put those items back. I apologized a couple of times to the guy behind me because the process took like 20 minutes.
I did end up getting the tuna and animal crackers for free and the coupons for the Olay stuff were no problem because I actually owed her money for those.
I also want to point out that I've maybe had one or two problems ever at Target and every time I go to Walmart, there is a problem and it takes FOREVER for me to get 2-3 items. So, I am finally actually going to listen to myself this time and not go back there except in the instances mentioned above. It's crowded, checking out is a hassle, and I always feel terrible when the person behind me has to wait 15 minutes in the express checkout because the cashier doesn't have a handle on the coupon policy.
OK. I'm done. That's it. Sorry to vent. I really am grateful that I got the deals I did, it's just that I get better ones from Target with none of the headaches. Thanks for listening!

I've got a lot of running to do today, so I got up early to run by Kmart and Walmart (more on that in the next post) to take advantage of a couple of rebate deals.
First Stop: Kmart

I took advantage of the Glade deal you can read about here. My Kmart didn't have these for $2.50; they were $2.99; however, I got $4 off my next order instead of the $3 I was expecting which was pretty sweet. Also, I got a coupon for up to $5 savings on my next Glad purchases.
I picked up the Oxy Clean as a result of my last Kmart trip. A coupon for a free one printed the last time I used my rewards card. Yay!
Total Out of Pocket: $4.32
Savings on Next Order: $4
Mail-in Rebate: $5
$4.68 Money Maker
Second Stop: Walmart

The tuna and animal crackers were free after printable coupons and the smoothie was free thanks to a coupon from Psst.
I did the Olay deal you can find here.
Total Out of Pocket: $6.56
Mail in Rebate: $15
$8.44 Money Maker
So for my trouble, I got all this free and will have made $13.12. Not too bad for a Wednesday Morning

never met me, hehe! Had a lot of running around to do today and while I was checking out at Target, a coupon printed for $1 off a $1 or more purchase at the Target Cafe. They offer 2 cookies for $1, so I got that and paid nothing. Then, I had that coupon for a free fresco taco from Taco Bell that expired today, so I swung by there and picked that up and headed home. I had the taco and some chips and dip from the house and topped the meal off with the chocolate chip cookies. Things always taste better when they're free.

Cleaning makes things, well cleaner; but it can also improve one's mood. I've noticed in the last couple of years that when I don't feel in control of my life that I get in a cleaning mood. Even when I can't control most of what's going on around me, I can control what I keep and what I throw out. Plus, I feel pretty accomplished when I can see the floor again, hehe!
I'm not sure if I didn't feel in control this week or if I was just in a mood, but I've done a lot of cleaning and am itching to do some more. I went through my closet and drawers and made a Goodwill bag.
The car is the next project. I want to get it completely cleaned out and have a few things in there, reusable shopping bags and a insulated food bag to keep snacks. I feel that, in the long run, it will help me to stay healthier and save money by having things in there that I can grab and eat while I'm out as opposed to stopping at a drive thru.
What did you learn this week?

I follow the philosophy that we all learn something new every day. Usually I do mine through Jeopardy, The History Channel or The Discovery Channel. I am trying to apply this to my frugal lifestyle as well. So while I may not learn something every day, I at least want to learn a few things per week. Aside from keeping up with the blogs, I've started listening to Money Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for a richer life. For info and free downloads of past episodes, visit
Anywho, I had a big shopping day on Saturday and spent a lot of money; however, I didn't buy anything that I won't use, so it was money well-spent. That brings me to the point of this particular post. While clothes shopping, I learned that no matter how cheap it is (unless it's totally free, of course), if you don't love it, don't buy it. No matter what kind of deal you get, if it's not something that's flattering or that you love, you won't wear it and it's money wasted.
I tried on a couple of dresses that looked cute on the rack and had the added bonus of being on sale. But after I put them on, I realized that they would go in the back of my closet never to be donned again. So, I put them back on the rack and saved $20 each. Guess I'll just have to keep looking for the perfect little black dress.

Below you'll find a picture of books I got at 50% off and you can get 50% off at most B.Dalton's in the country right now, namely because they're all closing.
When I was sixteen, I got my first job from a man who got his first job from my grandfather. I started junior year as a bookseller at B.Dalton, the mall division for Barnes and Noble. I have been there for seven years and the crew has become my family. Next Saturday, Jan. 16, we will close and there will be absolutely no bookstores in my hometown, like our citizens need to be more illiterate. But I could go on about that topic all day.
Here's what I got today, and if I'd had my ruthers, I would prefer to have no deal to post (among other things) if it meant I got to spend more time with the people I love. So...Tim, Regina, Marquita, Gena, Dana and Ron...I love you guys and thanks for seven awesome years! I wouldn't change a second.

but I got a lot for my bucks, so I don't feel quite so bad. Plus, I used my Amazon Visa, so I got points too. I'm a big fan of the cash system, but I've been using the Amazon card to get points, but I still think about each purchase just like paying with cash.
Anywho..here goes.
Aeropostale:
I got a sweater that began at $49.50. Then it went down to 34.99. When I bought one like it a couple of weeks ago it was down to $13.99. I got to the register with it today and it rang up at $10.50!
Victoria's Secret:
Yay semi-annual sale! I shop for bras and panties twice a year, during the VS semi-annual sale. I scored a bra for $13.99!
Tarjay! This one gets TWO pics:

That's my Sundance on top of the table! :)
So I went into Target for the Pita Chips (thank you Facebook!), Downy Wrinkle Releaser, First Aid Kits and the Band Aids. But lo and behold what did I find but a coffee table and two side tables for $39.99! It was the last one they had, so I snagged it.
Total for everything in both pics? $43.77, so basically the cereal was $0.50 and I paid for the coffee table but that was it. Yay Target deals!
Check out the next post for my saddest deal of the day.

I knew Wednesday was going to be a long day, but there was no way I was going to miss Super Doubles at Harris Teeter when they haven't done them since like September. The few hours of sleep that I lost was totally worth it! This trip now replaces my $0.50 Target trip a couple months ago as favorite shopping trip ever.
Original Price for everything above: $46.79
EVIC Savings: $12.43
Coupons tendered: $34.31
Total out of pocket: $.05
That's 99.89% savings!
My jaw almost dropped to the floor when she told me my total. I thought for sure I'd spent a dollar or two and was super excited about that prospect, so $.05 was a real shocker.

I just made my last student loan payment five months after graduation! I can't explain the elation I feel right now, to not owe anyone anything. It is a great feeling; I do know that.
When I was in high school, I never pictured my college experience quite like it turned out, and at the time, I was pretty bummed. Looking back, though, I'm not really sure I'd want to change it. My friends that all had "the real deal" are now in around $50,000 in debt and looking for work.
It took an extra year, putting a part-time tuition on a credit card for two semesters, and a whole lot of work, but I paid for my entire education myself. I went to community college for two years (something I hated at the time but now miss) and then transferred to a ridiculously expensive private school. I was able to live at home, and being able to pay for the community college semesters with scholarships and cash for two years helped immensely.
When I transferred, I continued to live at home and got several scholarships and grants. I only ended up having to take out one student loan. For some wacky reason, it was unsubsidized, so I was responsible for the interest accrued while I was in school (which ended up being over $1,000 in just two years).
My last year of school, I started squirreling away money. I tried to save at least half of each paycheck and counted the money every other week. Even before I started couponing, I paid everything I could in cash. It made me think more about what I was spending than if I just swiped a card at the checkout counter.
I also started cleaning a lot. I went through all of my things about once a month and made a donation pile. That made me think a lot about how much of my stuff I actually use and helped me curb my impulse buying.
I started thinking about each thing I considered buying in a store. I made a mental note of how often I would use it and if I would use it often, checked other stores and the internet for the lowest price before buying it. Ebay and Amazon became loyal friends.
I'd gotten well over the halfway point when I started thinking about life after college. I knew I wanted to move out at some point after graduation and started thinking about all the things I would need in an apartment. Since then, I have slowly accrued almost everything (except furniture) that I'll need.
Since I wasn't on a strict timeline, I was able to shop around, check out the best sales and compare prices on everything from dishes and mixing bowls to glassware and cleaning supplies.
I have a trunk at the end of my bed full of dish detergent, cleaning products and Air fresheners. I just ordered my Corningware last night with a rebate card and money from survey sites.
I didn't really put myself on a strict budget for the apartment spending. I just got as much stuff as possible for free and waited for things I wanted to go on a great sale. The only things I need now are an iron and an ironing board. Got a vacuum cleaner for Christmas! :)
I'm not sure that the way I did things would work for everyone, but setting a goal and seeing myself putting away that money every month really helped remind me that my goal was just that. Not a wish or a dream, but a goal that I could reach if I kept at it.
Now that I am debt-free, I aim to keep it that way for as long as possible. I hope to continue to save, maybe not half of each paycheck, but what I can so that when I do move, I won't have to worry about borrowing money.
Thanks for reading my ramblings and please feel free to share stories of your own in the comments section.

There are a lot of survey sites out there, and I am a member of many of them. Besides Pinecone Research, Lightspeed Consumer Panel has become my favorite. They send me at least 3-4 surveys a week, most of them aren't very legnthy, and the points don't take long at all to post.
Recently, however, I got the survey opportunity of a lifetime. I filled out a survey a couple of weeks ago and qualified for a study one of their sponsors was conducting for a bigger reward!
Aside from this awesome cash opportunity, I've already cashed out once for a $10 Amazon gift card that helped buy my brother's Christmas present, and I'm not far from cashing out again.

After a month of absolutely no organization of coupons other than dating the inserts, I decided it was time to sort and organize all of the coupons that have been floating around in my room and the backseat of my car. Here's what they all looked like an hour ago:

I got lucky in that whole pages of coupons had expired as a result of my neglect, so it didn't take as long as I thought to get everything togethe. Here is the end result:

Suffice to say, I'll not be letting them pile up like that for quite a while, probably not until next December anyway.
I've found that the taping the coupons to a sheet of paper in a binder is the best way to keep up with them. How do you keep yours organized? Got any ideas to simplify my system?
Thanks!

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the holidays, especially the precious little time I get to spend time with my family during them. However, I am glad that they're over and things can get back to normal.
I feel like I can finally go back in stores without wanting to kill myself. It's tough to search for the routine grocery deals when there are hundreds of people scrambling around cluelessly trying to find Christmas presents.
That said, I don't mind navigating the crowds for 75% off after Christmas sales. I just try to go when most of the people have gone back to work. I got all of the stuff pictured above for $29.85. All of this would have originally been $109.45. I saved $79.60!
I already have plans for three of these things before next Christmas, and if I don't need a random gift throughout the year have several gifts tucked away for the next go 'round of holidays.
:)
